Negatively New

Of all the villians (it feels wrong to compliement them as good...but if I had a word, that would be it, I'm sorry to say) that Disney has shown a representation of, I find Gaston to be truly the most terrifying villian because he really could be representing ANYONE in the world. Later on from this dreadful scene, he convinces (and is eager) the whole town to set up his wedding with full knowlege that the would-be bride would have to be thrown into it. Everyone also finds his creepy tactics as cute and pushing all negative thoughts aside with the slogan of "boys will be boys." Ewww...Gross! So, if you don't see it yet, he makes a pretty terrifying character. So, you see, the true terror of this story of "Beauty and the Beast" isn't that Gaston exists, but that all the background characters that represent plain society freaking (plus ignorantly) love him! What is the world truly coming to? Really?? People who plainly deride this flick by saying that it is about Stockholm Syndrome are ignoring that it is actually about the various ways that truly decent and good people get othered by nasty old society. Things like this are still happening today! People are quick to not trust the Beast because of how he looks, which only gives him an excuse to fall into his anger issues and pushes him even further away into his black hole of a hidden castle in the dark forest. Gaston isn't the only character who mocks Belle for being a bookworm either; the whole town agrees that there must be something wrong with her. Additionally too, her father gets carted off to a mental asylum just for being a little unique. Howard Ashman, the man who collaborated on the film's score and had a very large influence on the movie's story and themes, happened to be a gay man who died of AIDS shortly after this classic work was completed. If you happen to watch this fairy tale with just that in mind, the message of it becomes horribly clear. The character of Gaston demonstrates that bullies are rewarded and beloved by society as long as they possess a certain set, or mocking of charateristics, while nice, well-intentioned people who don't are ostracized. The love story that occurs between Belle and the Beast found in this story is much deeper than we all suppose, I think. It is about them finding solace in each other after society rejects them both.
